What are binaural beats?

Binaural beats are also called auditory illusions. When listening to two tones with slight differences in frequencies simultaneously, i.e., one in each ear, your brain creates a beat based on the frequency difference, called a binaural beat.

Two tones synchronize with your brain waves to create a single tone with a distinct frequency. This frequency is equal to the difference in hertz (Hz) between the two tones’ frequencies.

You’d hear an 8 Hz tone if you listened to a 220 Hz tone with your left ear and a 228 Hz tone with your right ear.

Studies suggest the two tones must have frequencies between 200 Hz and 900 Hz for a binaural beat to operate most effectively.

The difference between these two tones should not be greater than 30 Hz. It’s also necessary to listen to the tones individually, one in each ear. 

How do binaural beats work?

Binaural beats are created by brain waves. The range of brain waves varies from Low frequency to high amplitude and high frequency to low amplitude, resulting in different mental states. We will talk about five over here, each of which has a particular impact on the brain. 

To fully benefit from the beats, you will need earbuds or headphones. Here’s a playlist of high-quality binaural beats created by us. You will see that all the videos we create using binaural beats are no more than 30 mins long. There is no need to listen to these beats for extended periods. Now the five types of brain waves produced are:

Delta 1 to 4 Hz: These brain waves are associated with deep sleep & meditation.

Theta 4 to 8 Hz: Associated with relaxation, sleep transition (light sleeping, i.e., helps with insomnia), puts you in a meditative state and also helps reduce anxiety.

Alpha 8 to 14 Hz: These brainwaves now start steering the mind towards creativity and focus. Linked to reduced anxiety (and depression), improved memory, and increase positivity. 

Beta 14 to 30 Hz: Linked to increased focus and concentration, enhancement of cognition, and better task performance.

Gamma 30 to 100 Hz: Like beta waves, these help in focus, concentration, and memory recall.

Sleep

The most well-known application is as a therapy for insomnia. This sleep problem affects many individuals and can significantly impact their quality of life. 

The brain creates many types of brain waves during sleep, depending on the stage of sleep and the present level of mental activation. Relaxation and deep sleep are linked to low-frequency theta and delta brain waves. They help you sleep better by shifting your brain waves to theta and delta.

Depression & Anxiety

One of the most prevalent uses is to alleviate anxiety. Several studies have demonstrated that listening to these beats daily in the delta and theta frequency ranges can help people relax and reduce anxiety symptoms. Some researchers are even looking at using binaural beats in a hospice environment to see if they may benefit those struggling with terminal illnesses.

Music in the frequency range matching to alpha, theta, or delta brain waves can give some alleviation for persons suffering from depression. 

For some people, binaural beats music can help them feel better, but most depressed people will achieve more significant results if they combine binaural beats with standard treatment. 

It’s best to quit and see a therapist or physician if you discover unfavorable side effects.

Binaural beats with frequencies ranging from 1 to 100 Hz produce the same brain wave pattern as meditation. When you listen to a sound that has a specific frequency, your brain waves will synchronize with it.

Binaural beats may aid in creating the frequency required for your brain to produce identical waves like those observed during meditation.
